Summer is set to get a whole lot groovier, with the nostalgia of 70s Venice Beach and those effortlessly cool Cali vibes hitting St Kilda foreshore.
Setting up shop in the seaside playground of Port Philip, Rolla Bae is Melbourne’s newest (and most gram-worthy) leisure experience. Championing the pleasure-seeking past time and modern revival of roller skating it’s all about switching off, letting your hair down and creating carefree fun.
Hire a pair of Impala skates or blades from the retro peachy pink caravan, then get down to business exploring the buzzing, iconic St Kilda precinct on a set of leopard, aqua, hologram or pink wheels (go bold or go home).
Give ocean air and salty hair new meaning and while away the afternoon in the sunshine. Glide solo, enjoy a day out with mates or make a date of it with bae. Follow the Rolla Bae crew’s suggested routes swinging in to local hot spots like Piccolina Gelateria, The Espy, Pontoon and Paper Fish, before catching the sunset over Jacka Boulevard, or choose an alternate course checking out points of interest like Luna Park and the renowned European cake shops.
Remember, if you didn’t snap it did it even happen?
A nod to the 90s, mini boom boom speakers and bum bags are available to rent to elevate skate status to Heather Graham circa 1977 level, as well as all the gear (and no idea) to minimise skating mishaps like helmets and protective pads for knees and elbows.
Feeling a little out of practice? Don’t sweat it. The gang of Rolla gurus will demo the basic tips and tricks to new kids on the block.
The fun will continue well into 2020 with regular skate sessions and dance and skate workshops - yes you heard right, they will teach you how to moon walk on skates!
So, grab those rose tinted glasses and get your skates on. A sunshine state of mind awaits.
